Easy Mashed Potato Messy Play

It's often a bit trickier to find ideas for sensory play for very young babies. This is because a lot of them are just not appropriate, they either involve things that are inedible or a choking hazard.

This is one of my favourite messy plays for my 6 month old, it's so easy and quick and you could even just set aside some mash while you're making dinner!

It's completely taste-safe and perfect for when your baby has started weaning so that you can encourage them to try to taste it too.

You make it like any other mash but just add colour:

  • Wash and peel potatoes
  • Chop up into small pieces
  • Boil potatoes until very soft
  • Mash well especially if for a very young baby. You can add milk if you want a smoother texture. Or you can leave it lumpy if you like! Just make sure it's at a consistency that is appropriate for your baby
  • Colour it! I used Wilton's food gel. I find gel gives a more vibrant colour with less than liquid food colouring
  • Make sure your mash has completely cooled before giving it to your baby
  • Play!

Always supervise play especially when it involves food or small parts.

Clean up for us was a doddle! I used Rae Rae's new bib by Bibetta* for the first time, it's actually amazing! Wish I'd had it when Artie was weaning. It covers the table so you don't need to clean it down after.

I hope you have fun making lots of fun mess!
